Trent Reznor had intended the Year Zero project to last for at least two albums. Although there was a remix album released later in 2007, “Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D,” the campaign went “cold” at the end of April with the discovery of the 30th and final Web site. According to an interview in Wired, which represented the end of media silence about the Year Zero project from 42 Entertainment, “’I don't know if the audience was ready for it to end," says Susan Bonds, the president of 42 Entertainment. ‘But we always expected to pick it up again.’ Reznor, after all, had conceived Year Zero as a two-part album. ‘Those phones are still out there," she adds. "The minutes have expired. But we could buy new minutes at any point.’”
Evaluation:
Preparation:
We have evaluated the adequacy of Nine Inch Nail and 42 Entertainment’s background information on the current plunge of music industry by researching the tactics that they used. Trent Reznor intentionally leaked his new songs by leaving the USB flash drives in the bathrooms during the tour in Europe. He did this intentionally because of his dislike of the DRM policy that restricts fans from having the level of freedom with music that he felt they desired. Additionally, 42 Entertainments utilization of a broad spectrum of media, including Web sites, phone messages, automated e-mails and word-of-mouth shows an understanding of the development of viral marketing.
Implementaion:
Number of messages sent to media and activities designed:
We did not find a single press release about the Year Zero campaign. However, 42 Entertainment created 30 Web sites that fans would be led to if clues were properly followed. There were 3 active phone numbers that the fans could call to lead them to other clues. There were also an undisclosed number of t-shirts, flyers, and flash drives that were used during the campaign that acted as hidden clues and messages.
Number of messages placed and activities implemented:
The results in LexisNexis after searching for “Year Zero” were:
Newspapers – 791
Magazines & Journals – 107
Industry Trade Press – 94
The results in LexisNexis after searching for “Nine Inch Nails Year Zero” were:
Newspapers – 161
Magazines & Journals – 46
Industry Trade Press – 48
The newspapers that covered the Year Zero campaign were from all over the world. Publications from Australia to Korea and back wanted to know the news and updates about this innovative campaign. Several major newspaper publications in the United States, including The New York Times, USA Today and the Los Angeles Times picked up the story. However, the magazines, journals and Industry Trade Press that covered this campaign were mainly music-based publications, such as Rolling Stone and Wired.
Number who received/attended messages and activities:
The number of people who received/attended these messages is uncertain. There were an estimated 3.5 million people a part the “Resistance Movement” and countless fans involved with figuring out hidden clues, messages, and puzzles.
Impact:
The campaign made a huge impact among the loyal fan of Nine Inch Nails and also to general fans of music. The album, “Year Zero” ranked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and peaked in the top-10 in six other countries. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Trent Reznor encouraged his fans to steal more of their music, and may have indicated an attack on his record label, Universal Music Group, during a concert in Australia in 2007. According to 42 Entertainment’s Year Zero Case Study Web site, approximately 3.5 million people were involved with the Art of Resistance Web site and movement. The Year Zero campaign became a social phenomenon suggesting that the use of viral marketing and other innovative tactics is necessary to save the music industry from their plunge of business.

Introduction & Background
It began with a message coded into a t-shirt. It quickly grew into an online scavenger hunt with some thirty unique Web sites; an alternative reality “game” with more than 3 million players. A concept of a not-so-distant dystopian future plagued by environmental collapse and endless holy wars. A future where drugs are laced into the water supplies in order to control the masses. A future where art and music are weapons of resistance. A concept that begs to question: what if the future is now?
In 2006, to accompany his upcoming Nine Inch Nails album, “Year Zero,” singer and multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor enlisted the aid of 42 Entertainment to expand his concept of a dystopian future beyond the album. What resulted was an alternative reality game, or ARG, which lasted several months in early 2007. The ARG was comprised of 30 unique Web sites, USB drives left in bathrooms across Europe and an underground “Art Is Resistance” movement, which culminated in a secret concert that was raided by a SWAT team.
Year Zero, while definitely an interesting case study, is equally frustrating. While the techniques used in the project are common of viral marketing, the creative team behind the project did not think of it as a marketing campaign at all. In an article in Wired magazine, Reznor made one thing, “perfectly clear: ‘It's not fucking marketing. I'm not trying to sell anything’.” [Edited something out]
Regardless of the intent behind the project, Year Zero presents itself as an interesting solution to some of the issues facing the music industry. The use of ARGs, pioneered by 42 Entertainment, may very well be a popular technique in the near future to accompany the launches of anything from movies to video games to music. If nothing else, Year Zero is a clear indication that fans of music and other entertainment media are looking for something more than traditional marketing.
Situation Analysis
42 Entertainment:
42 Entertainment was founded in 2002 by Jordan Weisman, and has been growing and building its reputation as an innovator ever since. 42 Entertainment’s mission, according to their Web site, is to produce the world’s most innovative and immersive entertainment to their distribution partners. 42 Entertainment is an independent producer that develops ground-breaking entertainment experiences for their distribution partners. They also call themselves “the storytellers who pioneer new forms of cross-platform narratives and build powerful online communities, to create highly participatory experiences for our audience.”
42 Entertainment was the first company to produce alternate reality games (ARG), a new genre that only dates back to 2001. ARGs offer an immersive experience to sophisticated users who seek a higher level of engagement from a game, both online and offline. ARGs produced by 42 Entertainment have been used as part of the marketing campaigns for movies such as "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and video games for the Xbox 360 gaming console such as Halo 2. The company’s latest effort was created to promote Warner Bros.' 2008 film "The Dark Knight." ARGs are not typical video games and are more like online scavenger hunts. They utilize Web sites, telephones and other forms of media to offer clues to users to solve a puzzle. ARGs also provide hints at information about the upcoming product. ARGs are excellent ways to promote products, but there is a setback: cost. ARGs are expensive to stage, which is why they've been associated with major corporations. ARGs can cost anywhere from $1 million to $3 million. Web sites such as Gamasutra.com say that although the ARGs are expensive, they are defiantly worth the money.
Another example of an expensive but effective ARG is the Vista OS campaign. In 2007 a global puzzle game, by 42 Entertainment, was created to celebrate the launch of Windows Vista OS. The winner of the game was awarded a trip to outer space. More than 100,000 people registered and tried to solve the online puzzles that gave clues to staged events around the world. Finally, 42 Entertainment’s "Cathy's Book" from 2006 was the first ARG packaged as a multimedia book experience. It used web sites, real phone numbers, and physical clues in the context of a "diary" written by a teenage girl to solve a murder mystery. The book wound up on the New York Times' Children's Bestseller List. ARGs and viral marketing campaigns have been effective with devoted fans willing to invest their time, and who will spread the word across their online and real world communities.
Viral Marketing:
Viral Marketing is one of the marketing strategies introduced in 1996 by a professor in Harvard Business School named Jeffrey Rayport. Viral marketing mainly focuses on spreading the information through social networks by the users creating a great exposure to the message. Like a virus, the message will rapidly be passed among the public by passing the information to others. According to the six principles of Viral Marketing, the marketing begins when the company gives away their product or services for free. This will allow the public to obtain the product effortlessly and increase the number of people consuming the product or service. At the same time, it exploits the motivation and behavior of the public. As the result it becomes a dynamic promotion to introduce the new products to the public. Recently, companies in the music industry have been attempting to apply this marketing strategy to promote the sales of their CDs.
The Music Industry:
The music industry in the 21st century has been encountering a severe problem with online piracy and file-sharing. The increasing rate of file-sharing has been blamed in part for the decline of CD sales and tumbling the music industry’s revenue. The Australian Recording Industry Association found that CD sales in Australia were also down 12.23 percent in 2007. This decline of sales was mainly caused from the rapid transition of recorded CD to digital music file. According to Business Day.com, approximately 2,680 record stores closed in the US by the end of 2005. Furthermore, large record companies have laid-off thousands of employees. For example, to cope with the failing market and falling record sales, EMI Records, laid-off more than 1,500 employees through 2008. While CD retailers and music stores have declined, sellers of online and digital music have become more dominant. By 2009, online music stores, such as iTunes and Amazon.com, owned 29.1 percent of sales of music market.
In order to counterattack this crisis of illegal downloading and music piracy, the music industry attempted to add an access control technology called Digital Rights Management (DRM). DRM limited the consumers to copy their music file to transfer to other media devices. For example, Apple’s iTunes has applied DRM to every music and movie file they sold at their Web site. This prohibits the users from creating back-ups for the DVD’s and music downloaded from the music store.
Nine Inch Nails:
Nine Inch Nails is a band that is largely the work of front-man Trent Reznor. Reznor began writing and recording music under the name Nine Inch Nails in 1988. His first full-length album, “Pretty Hate Machine,” was released in 1989. After the release of the first album, Reznor put together a touring band, and began touring aside popular alternative rock bands and collecting a growing fan base. Nine Inch Nails was also featured in the first Lollapalooza tour in 1991. By the time 2007’s “Year Zero” was scheduled to hit, Nine Inch Nails had become incredibly popular. According to All Music Guide, “Nine Inch Nails were the most popular industrial group ever and were largely responsible for bringing the music to a mass audience." The style pushed by Reznor and Nine Inch Nails had become so influential that in addition to spawning acts like Marylin Manson and Filter, even renowned artists like Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose had fired his band and attempted to emulate the industrial rock sound in 1999.
The album “Year Zero” would be Nine Inch Nails’ fifth studio production. As opposed to the five-year gaps that were privy to the previous four albums, “Year Zero” would be released just two years after the chart-topping (No. 1 on The Billboard Top 200 in 2005 and 2005; No. 1 on Top Internet Albums and No. 2 on Top Canadian Albums in 2005) “With Teeth” (2005). The album would also represent the end of Reznor’s contractual obligation to Universal Music Group. Reznor’s anger with his record label resulted in his criticizing the label shortly after the release of “Year Zero,” writing: “As the climate grows more and more desperate for record labels, their answer to their mostly self-inflicted wounds seems to be to screw the consumer over even more.” Reznor continued to state that a label representative responded to his inquiries about the higher prices for “Year Zero” over-seas with: “'It's because we know you have a real core audience that will pay whatever it costs when you put something out - you know, true fans. It's the pop stuff we have to discount to get people to buy.' So... I guess as a reward for being a 'true fan' you get ripped off."
Reznor has also spoken out against the compact disc format and Digital Rights Management-protected music. In an article in The Guardian, Reznor said, “"The medium of the CD is outdated and irrelevant. It's really painfully obvious what people want - DRM-free music they can do what they want with. If the greedy record industry would embrace that concept I truly think people would pay for music and consume more of it.” Reznor’s disdain for the record industry’s strategy of right-protected music and a CD format served as a reason and justification for the intentional leaking of editable songs on USB flash drives. Reznor said, “As to what I'm looking to gain from doing this, I'm not really sure. . . it just seemed like something I'd want as a fan."

1 – 200 of 246 Newer› Newest»Before reading this post I was unaware of what an alternative reality game was. After doing some research about the “Year Zero” campaign and other work that 42 Entertainment has done I think it is definitely the future of entertainment marketing. Integrating state-of-the-art-digital communication with a fantastical storyline gets people to sit up and take notice. It is something that musical artists, Hollywood and technology can use to market their products effectively. One example of how popular this theme can be seen right here on the Penn State campus with the Humans vs. Zombies phenomenon.
According to this Venture Beat article (http://venturebeat.com/2009/01/30/42-entertainment-creates-alternate-reality-game-for-new-film-the-international/) the success of alternative reality games is not in the number of people who participate but in the game but the amount of attention that it gets for the campaign. Over time, it is most likely this technique will become outdated and over played so the challenge is in keeping your marketing ideas fresh. I think that the best thing to keep in mind when using an ARG to market your product in a way which sets it apart from the rest. Changing up the storyline and using different ways to involve your audience, like using text messaging and twitter will be necessary in gaining media attention and creating a successful campaign.
One thing that I thought was interesting is that according to the article, 42 Entertainment only has a staff of 25 people. The firm works a lot with outside contractors but I think that they did an excellent job of creating such a huge campaign with so few workers.

I had no idea what an alternate reality game was before reading about this case study. After reading about it I thought it was a really good idea. It definately sparked interest in the fans and was very innovative.
According to Ty Montague, creative director of the J. Walter Thompson ad agency, "When done well, ARGs can be extraordinarily effective."
According to Wired Magazine,"The game was extremely effective at generating excitement. Every time a song was leaked, the message boards were swamped. By the time the album hit store shelves in April, 2.5 million people had visited at least one of the game's 30 Web sites."
Due to the success of this campaign, I am confident that this is the future of entertainment marketing.

I, too, had never heard about the year zero campaign. But I am not a big computer person and don't play online games, which made me wonder if there was another way for 42 entertainment to create buzz for people like me who don't have a huge online presence? However, I do think that their strategy is genius and has clearly had alot of success in reaching their target audience. I also started to think if other industries could employ a similar strategy? For instance, could a major league baseball team or a university's football program create a similar game that would attract more fans via promotions and ticket sales? I think that with the popularity of sports websites online, there could be a huge opportunity for teams to run a similar campaign. But what I did not understand was when the lead singer said that this was not fucking marketing for year zero? Of course it was. How can it not be? I don't know what else you would call the 42 entartainment campaign, other than marketing? It will be interesting to see if that's where the world of marketing is headed. I think the opportunities are endless.

Like Allison, I was also unaware of what an alternative reality game was before reading this. However, from the initial readings of this "Year Zero" case study, it is a blatant tactic at marketing. Marketing is defined on dictionary.com as the act of buying or selling in a market.
With the declining sales of the music industry in the 20th century, Nine Inch Nails as well as other alternative rock bands need to make money and still reflect their edgy musical style. The comment that this was not a way to sell anything or market anything fits into the branded image Nine Inch Nails wants to portray to their loyal consumers but is an out-right lie to the public.
ARG's are a genius way to boost brand recognition and any band that hopes to gain a slight edge in the music industry should use this in the future as a marketing tool.
Sara Oxfeld
Like most of my classmates, I was unaware of what an alternative reality game was. However, after reading the case study and doing some research I was amazed at how much information there is on ARGs on the Internet. There is even ARGN.COM--a site with the most up to date information on ARGs. In an April 19, 2007 article from argn.com, "Alternate reality gaming has enjoyed a great deal of mainstream press lately, particularly for games like Year Zero and World Without Oil. Tomorrow night, 42 Entertainment will be featured on Spike TV’s Game Head, a “half-hour weekly program dedicated to everything that is happening in the world of video games,” according to the Spike TV web site. While the show description is interesting enough, a more intriguing tidbit of information game in a game tip sent in to ARGNet which states to watch the show closely, as there may be “something you are missing!”
I believe alternative reality games are the future of entertainment. I also believe learning about them is beneficial to us since we will soon be entering the working world. ARGs will be a new, fresh and innovative approach to regular marketing campaigns.
According to the webblog Signal vs. Noise the campaign for Nine Inch Nails by 42 Entertainment "is a great example of blurring the line between marketing and entertainment."
Especially considering the music industry has seen increased piracy and declining cd sales, using alternate reality games is a way to increase intrigue about an album in a new and innovative way.
The future of entertainment marketing seems to be heading in this direction because of the state the music industry is in now as well as the fact that people get bored easily with the same thing. Promoting an album the same way does nothing new for the consumer but having things like different clues on t-shirts and placing flash drives in bathrooms at concerts gets the public interested and involved.
This campaign was completely unknown to me and it is strange that such a complex marketing strategy works, but that is because I am not as digitally savvy as many. Rolling Stones magazine like the “year zero” campaign better than the LOST online campaign. I was reading about where the inspiration for the campaign came from and it was the disdain of the American government and the Bush administration that inspirired the marketing campaign that won a Grand Prix at the Cannes. Marketing the music was not the point according to the band, but the company that created the campaign 42 Entertainment certainly wanted to make it successful and they did that. Not only was the campaign successful, but the CD did well. This is not true for many bands these days as the music industries sales have plummeted in recent years. I worked on helping the local record store develop a plan to increase sales and get more business while doing this I learned a lot more about the music industry. This campaign for Nine Inch Nails created something that interested people enough to buy their music and as much as music fans don’t like to be considered mainstream it’s a business, which is all about money. If this sort of online campaing is a money maker it will be replicated again and again.
Although, I was familiar with the changes of the music industry and different avenues artists have taken to step away from the traditional marketing strategies, alternative reality games were something that I have never heard about. I find that an arg is definitely a step out of the box when looking at the typical marketing plans of record labels and music businesses in the industry. I love that unlike the usual workings of the music industry args really are out to benefit the fans of the music. In an billion dollar industry, where fans are crucial to the success of the music artists, its about time that fans are actually given the opportunity to actually become somewhat apart of the music they love and buy. This innovative marketing strategy finally acknowledges the artists appreciation for its fans. While the “Year Zero” proved to be quite successful with about 3.5 million people becoming apart of the “Resistance Movement”, I am not completely sure whether this type of strategy would be completely successful every time. While, you would think fans would want to have an alternative way to access their music, this might be a little too much work for some people. Even for me personally, I am a huge music fan, but I think I would rather just pay for my music and listen to it, rather than have to go through websites, clues, concerts, and hints to get to the music I want to hear. As I said I think it’s a definitely a fresh idea that should be used more to see how successful it could be, but I just wonder how effective it would be with all types of artists and genres of music.
After reading an article written in Wired magazine, I was able to gain a better understanding of how effective args can be. Jordan Weisman, a former executive of Microsoft, who developed args, explained that Nine Inch Nails singer Trent Reznor wanted to “take’subdural’ approach: Instead of shouting the message, hide it.” He explains that the audience is able to discover something and then have the desire to share it, because in society today people always need/want something to talk about. Rather than just giving people information about the product, args may be more appealing and fun to people in that they have to discover or find the information about the product.
Before reading this post, I hadn't heard of the "Year Zero" campaign specifically. However, I was familiar with the concept of alternate reality games because I actually co-founded the club that plays the Humans vs. Zombies game on campus. The idea behind alternative reality games, or "urban games" in the case of Humans vs. Zombies, is to take the idea behind video games one step further and make it interactive. Approaches like this are more effective than traditional marketing for the entertainment industry. I feel like viral marketing is much better for reaching out to target audiences and getting them more involved in the campaign. I think that this campaign did an excellent job of involving people without obviously being a marketing campaign. While it seems extremely complicated, viral marketing is also completely brilliant.
I did not know what to expect when I read the title of this presentation. As soon as I started reading, I was sucked in. Ever since I was a little girl, I always wanted to pretend there were codes I had to decipher, messages I had to find, secret passageways leading to unknown destinations. I think the inner child within all of us still gets excited when we think of things like that. That we are a part of a mystery and our contribution could unravel the truth. This campaign, I believe, was genius. Especially with music. With online music files and the illegal sharing that is happening everywhere in this country, I think it was a brilliant move to open the door to something new... a marketing strategy that is fresh. This adds to the excitement of an unknown mystery. I completely agree with Reznor saying "The medium of the CD is outdated and irrelevant. It's really painfully obvious what people want - DRM-free music they can do what they want with. If the greedy record industry would embrace that concept I truly think people would pay for music and consume more of it.” If the music industry could embrace marketing like this more often and the market the way it is progressing, I think it could make a world of difference for people wanting to BUY cds because it would mean more to actually have something tangible in their hands.
Katherine Matz
I had not previously heard about ARGs before reading this case study. While I think they are an interesting marketing concept and have proven to be very effective, I am still skeptical about them. I feel that this type of marketing activity would only be effective on people who enjoy playing games online. Was this the case with the Nine Inch Nails fan base? I'm also not sure what the benefit of playing the game is. Is it free music? If so, I think that is a good motivator. I am left wondering if this type of viral marketing would be as effective with artists from different music genres such as country or pop. Would these audiences be intrigued by an online mystery game?
Similar to many of my peers, before reading this case study, my knowledge on alternative reality games was minimal at best. Although I do not think it is the most efficient method in marketing one's ideas, I do credit it in terms of stickiness as innovative and creative. Honestly, it's nice to see practitioners operate outside of the box and elude from the norms of traditional marketing and promotions.
In regards to the decline in record sales, sad to say, but many of my friends have always tried to find a way to get music for cheap, if not free. The mentality behind the concept is, "why pay if I don't need to?" So although I do not agree with the idea of removing DRM's from music, especially with the increase in music piracy, I do admire the involvement that this campaign created with its cliffhanger-like scavenger hunts. It's ingenious in a sense since it engages the targeted audience interactively and increases their curiosity little by little by continuing to provide incentives of gaining further knowledge and possibly, rewarding returns (i.e. free music). It maximizes on its message by putting the "bait" out and slowly reeling the consumers in.
One of the major downfalls that I see with this technique though is its extensive costs as well as the difficult ability to measure and evaluate its effectiveness.
I can't believe I have never heard of this case. I am not necessarily a fan of alternative reality gaming or Nine Inch Nails, but this seems like a story that would definitely catch my eye.
I think the idea is just so fresh in the generally stagnant scene of today's music. Music piracy is such a hard topic because why would someone BUY something when stealing is so widely accepted and generally has little to no consequences. While an idea like this cannot last very long, the effort is much appreciated.
I also appreciate that the band really targeted its fanbase. It knew what kind of people listened to their music and what kinds of things they like to do. That shows a real appreciation for your supporters.

Oak furniture has spent many years at the top of the charts when it comes to favourites. Its appeal is due to the lovely warm, coarse texture and its functionality. As it is a very hard wood, oak is superb for making furniture which will stand the test of time. If you have a young family and need tables and chairs which are robust, oak is definitely worth a thought. Although it is often quite expensive, you will find that the items made from oak will keep their good looks and will probably still be around to take a battering from your children's children in years to come. The price tag on some items may put people off buying, but, if you were to consider getting some oak unfinished furniture, you may be able to save yourself quite a few dollars.
